Only because the content was so compelling was I able to make it to the end of this recording.ĭisappointed: no application of principles to life All things considered it sounds like this book was recorded using the integrated microphone on a laptop by a "friend" of the author for free as a favor. There is a loud background hiss and the acoustics of the room in which the book was recorded are evident and distracting. From a technical standpoint the recording is terrible too. The timing and word emphasis is so random it sounds as though the narrator understands phonics, not not the actual meaning of the words he's reading. The narrator uses this breathy, melodramatic tone that made me want to laugh at first, but seven hours later I could barely survive to the end. On the other hand, accepting the subjectivity of personal taste, the narration of this book is solidly the worst I have ever experienced. It is as essential to your presenting as Christ is to your salvation. This book contains a gospel message that every Christian parent MUST hear. The message is essential, the reading horrible. ![]()

He later concludes that media actively alters human perception, interactions, and relationships. However, Debord was not entirely against new technology but objected to the use of these technologies for economic gain.īy quoting Marxist philosophy on alienation and commodity fetishism, Debord examines the direct connection between mass media and the economy. The book narrates how human beings have become so technology-driven that they have forgotten to actually live through their experiences. ![]() ![]() ![]() As Rascal grew older, he began to draw the attention of female raccoons along with the aggression of other males. And so, the furry little woodland critter that was once as tame as a housecat had become more and more mischievous as he aged. ![]() But, as their year together came to an end, Sterling began to realize that the raccoon was a wild animal at heart, and was not meant to be a pet. They fished nearby lakes and streams, explored the wooded countryside, and went for bike rides with Rascal riding in a basket attached to the handlebars. The young Sterling adopted an orphaned baby raccoon and named him Rascal. For the next year, the boy and the raccoon were inseparable and spent every waking moment together. As he famously says in an interview regarding the 1968 French translation of Žert, “rage seized me”. Thus, there followed a cascade of translations (namely in French and English) as Kundera would eventually become dissatisfied even with the latest “definitive” translated version. The novel has been translated into English, French, and many other languages more than once, depending on Kundera’s dissatisfaction with a particular translation (which, at first, he would support). The various translations of his novel Žert (The Joke) exemplify this point. He has said many times that he did not trust translators to translate his works accurately and faithfully. Milan Kundera, a Czech émigré writer, living in Paris and now writing in French, is (in)famous for his tight and obsessive authorial control. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why did we read this book: Because of the promise of awesome, rounded female characters, Mars, Aliens and Robots. Stand alone or series: Stand alone but could be a series! Hopefully it is a series! If the same thing happens to you, this is my advice: ALWAYS CARRY DUCT TAPE. because until you’ve been shot at, pursued by terrifying aliens, taught maths by a laser-shooting robot goldfish and tried to save the galaxy, I don’t think you can say that you’ve really lived. ![]() I’d been worried I was about to be told that my mother’s spacefighter had been shot down, so when I found out that I was being evacuated to Mars, I was pretty calm.Īnd despite everything that happened to me and my friends afterwards, I’d do it all again. The fact that someone had decided I would be safer on Mars, where you could still only SORT OF breathe the air and SORT OF not get sunburned to death, was a sign that the war with the aliens was not going fantastically well. ![]() ![]() She has seen the depths of the society unseen by the previous travelers. With the opening arc of Thor: God of Thunder, The God Butcher, that need is met quite handily. I desperately miss the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning take on cosmic Marvel and while today’s cosmic Marvel series, Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, are entertaining both have been far too involved with Earth-based Marvel heroes to really sate my need for the the weird stuff. I absolutely love the weird “out-there” material of Marvel Comics and there isn’t nearly quite enough of it on the shelves to sate my hunger for it. I feel I should almost preface this bit of reviewing by saying that I love almost anything that throws together the words Marvel and Cosmic. I finally managed to request the first two Thor: God of Thunder trades, The God Butcher and Godbomb, for the library and man Jason Aaron and Essad Ribic absolutely live up the litany of great writers and artists of yore. ![]() I’ve been a fan of the Thor comics for a while but with all these so-called “adult” responsibilities I’ve had little chance to really keep up with today’s comics. ![]() |
